Energy Challenges

Electrical power generation from coal is projected to increase from its current 1% figure to 25% by 2025 according to the Government of Pakistan's National Power Policy 2013.

This will significantly increase the share of electricity from indigenous sources and improve the security of energy supply as well as improving diversity in the power generation portfolio of the country.

Pakistan recognises that its current energy mix is overly dependent on imported oil and gas and the benefits to the economy, particularly in the balance of payments and foreign exchange, in expanding domestic coal fired electricity generation are self-evident. The Government has also recognised that the electricity distribution system requires considerable upgrading and again the Power Policy 2013 is committed to this to improve the efficiency of the current system and for future generation projects throughout the country.
